Our Journey

Carnellan House was established following more than a decade of practical experience delivering inclusive physical, creative and community programmes in Oxford. Through this work, the trustees witnessed how appropriately adapted activities could improve confidence, wellbeing, skills and social participation for disabled people and others facing barriers to participation.

That experience inspired the creation of Carnellan House as a charity dedicated to advancing health, education, religion and social inclusion for the public benefit. Our work is built on a simple belief: lasting change comes not only from providing support, but from creating opportunities for people to discover their abilities, develop confidence and participate fully in community life.

For more than twelve years, the trustees have worked in partnership with OXSRAD, one of Oxfordshire's leading disability organisations. Together we have delivered inclusive community events, creative programmes and adapted physical activities, working alongside disabled participants, their families and the wider community. This experience shaped our understanding that every person, regardless of ability or circumstance, should have the opportunity to learn, contribute and thrive.

The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 further strengthened our commitment to supporting people experiencing displacement and hardship. As two of our trustees are Ukrainian nationals, the arrival of Ukrainian refugees in Oxford brought new opportunities to help people rebuild confidence, establish new connections and become active members of their local communities. It also reinforced our belief that health, education, inclusion and community engagement are closely connected.

Today, Carnellan House focuses on creating opportunities for disabled people, refugees, displaced people and others experiencing disadvantage through inclusive physical activity, creative programmes, volunteering, community engagement and support for the Orthodox Christian faith. Everything we do is guided by our commitment to strengthening communities, encouraging participation and helping people realise their potential.
